Rain or Shine - Sunscreen Is Essential

It's a stormy day here in Central Florida. Strong gusty winds, lightening, thunder and a steady drenching rain is slated to keep us company all day.
This is exactly the kind of day when it is super important to take care of your skin. Wear your sunscreen. Yes, even when, and especially when, you can't see the sun.

Your dermatologist will tell you that on overcast and rainy days, your exposure to harmful UVA and UVB rays may actually be more intense. That means the potential for ultraviolet light to penetrate deep into your skin is even greater than on a day at the beach. Gentlemen, you need sunscreen too!

This in turn leads to the formation of more superoxidized free radicals which literally attack your own skin at the cellular level. This is one time when being super is definitely not good! For some it results in only dark spots on the skin's surface. For others, the results can be basal cell cancer which, if untreated, can be deadly.

Prevention is the key. Always wear sunscreen and apply at least fifteen minutes before going outside, allowing time for the lotion or spray to be absorbed. Then simply reapply as needed, like after an extended period of swimming or enjoying the hot tub.

Spring Brings Babies - Oh So Cute!

Yesterday, as a friend and I drove to the movies, we couldn't help but notice the animal kingdom definitely thinks it is spring. We saw several Mama cows grazing beside their new born calves. From the looks of it, most are less than a month old; some still just a little wobbly as they try to keep up with their adult herd mates.

Did you know both Mom and Dad Sand Hill crane raise their child as a family unit? Now is the time to watch as the parents flank their young baby, protecting it from predators and teaching it to graze and find insects.

It is amazing just how cute the little ones are. Light brown in color, they are all soft and fuzzy with down. It's hard to imagine that all too soon they will grow to be just as tall as their folks and their downy soft brown feathers will yield to the dark grey of adulthood.
