There was one particular set of older ladies who used to come in about once a month to stock up on greeting cards, stationery (yes this was before the days of Twitter and eMail), and gifts. We learned a lot about their families and followed along as babies were born, Christened, celebrated first birthdays, first days of school, first cars, etc.
One thing I could always count on with their frequent visits was a complaint. In most card stores, the selection of card subjects is presented alphabetically. Seasonal cards like Christmas and Halloween are placed at the front of the store, but everyday themes like birthday, get well, sympathy and the like are organized from A to Z.
This works out to be convenient for most shoppers. Not so for the ladies. They took objection to the idea that an alphabetical listing took life moment's out of chronological order. Now while it was okay that Get Well came before Sympathy, it was most certainly not okay that Baby came before Wedding! And so they made it known.
I have to admit, I'm a bit old fashioned myself and I appreciate the family values which would have aligned the cards in order of Love, Marriage and Baby.
