Mom, Me and the Avon Lady

When I was a little girl of about five, sometimes I could persuade Mom to make me beautiful like her. This usually followed a visit from our Avon lady. She always made me feel important by letting me page through my own copy of the Avon brochure.

Sometimes, she would share samples of the newest fashion shades in lipstick and blush. I thought they were so cute. The little lipstick bullets were surely meant for me. . .they were just my size. I learned to carry my purse with me as we sat in the living room pouring over the photos of the lovely ladies in the catalog. How elegant they looked.

It's funny, too, because although I detested wearing long pants or pedal pushers, which were all the rage then, I was basically a tomboy at heart. I was in Kindergarden then and my favorite pasttime was to climb the jungle gym with the boys in my class as we raced to the top to take command of our rocket ship to Mars. I was the only girl in the class interested in space travel.

Still, I could sit quite demurely and contentedly when Avon came calling.
